TGIF: Election Round Up 10.04.19

A six week series looking at the good, the bad and ugly on the campaign trail, from your friendly progressive communications firm.

THE GOOD

This week NDP leader Jagmeet Singh gave us some much needed cuteness as he shared photos of him on the campaign trail with adorable babies and their families speaking about the NDP’s campaign promise of universal child care for all.

THE BAD

Thousands of Canadians showed up for global climate strikes across the country last Friday, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Many people  across party lines were quick to point out the irony of the Prime Minister participating in a global movement that is critical of the environmental record of world leaders, Trudeau included. From a public relations perspective, his decision to participate in the Montreal Climate Strike is confusing at best.

THE UGLY

On Wednesday video surfaced of NDP leader Jagmeet Singh being confronted by a man in Montreal’s Atwater Market who advised he remove his turban to look “more Canadian.” Jagmeet handled the interaction with politeness, responding that Canadians are diverse and can look like all sorts of people, but the interaction itself points to much larger issues of systemic racism that have permeated this entire election period. It is also important to underscore that one should not be expected to perform politeness in the face of racism and discrimination, and that expectation itself is a symptom of larger issues.

That’s all for this week! Stay tuned for our next round up on Thursday October 10, 2019
