#TakeoverTuesday: Sarah Harney, Strategist

Every Tuesday we’ll be profiling a MediaStyle staff member on our Instagram so that you can get to know our great team. Here are some of the questions that came up during our first #TakeoverTuesday:

Who is Sarah?

I am an Anishinaabe woman who is currently completing her PhD in communications. I came to MediaStyle from the non-governmental sector, and have experience with research, advocacy, creating grassroots campaigns, community building, and engagement.

What’s your favourite part of being a Strategist at MediaStyle?

I’m passionate about telling stories that might not typically be heard, and helping people understand one another a little better. My favourite part of being a Strategist at MediaStyle is working with good organizations to help them tell their stories in creative ways.

What did you want to be growing up?

I wanted to be a ballerina until I was about 12. Unfortunately for younger Sarah, I am extremely uncoordinated.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned at MediaStyle?

We did a MediaStyle scavenger hunt to familiarize ourselves with where everything is located around the office, and I found numerous mystery closets and doors I had no idea existed.

What is your favourite book?

One of my favourite books I’ve read recently is Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. This book is such a beautiful account of teachings about plants and our relationship to the land as Indigenous peoples.

What emoji do you use most?

For some reason, my most used emoji is the hang ten emoji. 🤙

How is Rogue today?

Rogue is great!  Rogue is my tiny mutt who is thrilled to be able to spend some of her days at MediaStyle working as our office greeter.

Would you rather fight 100 Rogue-sized horses or 1 horse-sized Rogue?

Definitely 1 horse-sized Rogue, this dog is powerless against treats and belly rubs.

Best band at Bluesfest and why?

The best performance I saw at Bluesfest was Pussy Riot. They put on a great show, and I admire their activism and commitment to advocating for gender equity and LGBTQ2S+ rights.

How did you get started in your career?

I studied communications for both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, but worked in various sectors before joining MediaStyle. I taught communications at Algonquin College for a couple of years, and previously worked in the non-governmental sector advocating for Indigenous rights.

All of the experience I gained through my previous jobs adds to my skill set as a Strategist; I don’t think there is a linear career path that best sets you up to work in public affairs.

Tune in tomorrow for our next #TakeoverTuesday when we will be featuring one of our Design Strategists, Parisa Yazdani.
