Tenacity Act 10: MediaStyle Award at Algonquin College
What is it?
Algonquin College is a post-secondary institution in Ottawa that offers diplomas, degrees and certificates in a range of disciplines and specialities. In 1994, Algonquin College opened Mamidosewin Centre to empower and support their Indigenous students in the next phase of their lives (mino-biimaadizwin — “the good way of life”) in a way that is respectful and reflective of Indigenous cultures.
The Mamidosewin Centre provides a variety of events that celebrate and honour Indigenous culture, provides academic and peer support to Indigenous students and provides information on Indigenous bursaries, scholarships and other funding support.
Why did MediaStyle want to help?
MediaStyle has been honoured to work on many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit projects over the past 10 years. The idea of giving back to the communities that have supported us and that we’ve been welcomed into over the years was of utmost importance us as an organization. As our mentor and former client, Senator Murray Sinclair says, “education is what got us here, and education is what will get us out”. This was a concrete way that we could give back and invest in the next generation of communicators.
“We are excited to be supporting the next generation of First Nations, Métis and Inuit communication students through this partnership with Algonquin College. Most importantly, this award isn’t just financial support, as it offers the opportunity for a paid internship with MediaStyle. Students need tangible experience where they can apply the theoretical to help build their portfolio and then their career.”

How are we helping?
MediaStyle has worked with Algonquin College since its beginning, supporting both interns and graduates with paid work placements, seminars, or full-time employment. We wanted to do something for the community that would be a lasting contribution and endowing an award seemed a good fit.
The MediaStyle Award will be awarded annually to one Indigenous student in either the Public Relations, Journalism or Advertising Marketing Communications Management program who can demonstrate passion and thoughtfulness in everything they do. The recipient will also have an opportunity for a paid placement at MediaStyle.
We look forward to welcoming the first recipient of the award to our team in 2020 for their placement.
Our final act of #Tenacity is to empower Indigenous youth through education by partnering with Algonquin College! To support these future communicators we've established an annual award for Indigenous marketing, public relations, communications, and journalism students. MediaStyle's work is shaped by 6 pillars of core values such as a dedication to reconciliation and advocating for universal access to education. We are so proud to work with the folks at Algonquin College to establish this program that will provide financial support and mentorship to students who are studying to use communications for a force of good.Read more the MediaStyle student award here:https://mediastyle.ca/2019/01/31/tenacity-act-10-mediastyle-award-at-algonquin-college/

This is one of our Ten Acts of Tenacity, commemorating MediaStyle’s 10th anniversary. Throughout January, we will be announcing a series of donations, fundraising initiatives, and pro-bono support aimed at celebrating those making change in our community. This is our way of saying “thank you” to all those who have supported us in during our first decade in business.
