Tenacity Act 8: Workshop for youth at the Maniwaki Friendship Centre
Who are they?
Located an hour from downtown Ottawa, the Maniwaki Native Friendship Centre improves urban Indigenous quality of life through support services, advocacy, information and referrals to programs and services catered to Indigenous families living in or passing through Maniwaki
The Friendship Centre promotes holistic healthy lifestyles, offers cultural activities and eases the transition to urban living. It also promotes cultural awareness by bridging the urban Indigenous population and local communities.
As part of its programming, they host a weekly homework club for Indigenous youth from the area.
Why did MediaStyle want to help?
The Friendship Centre movement is something that MediaStyle has supported over many of its past ten years. In addition to that, we asked Elder Claudette Commanda where our skills might best be applied for this project. She underlined the important work that Executive Director Charlotte Commonda and her team are doing at the Friendship Centre and it seemed like a great opportunity for us to help out.
“Supporting the extremely important work that the Friendship Centre movement is doing has been something we at MediaStyle have been quite proud of, so it seemed very fitting when Elder Commanda suggested they might be a good place for us to offer our help.”
–Caitlin Kealey, CEO at MediaStyle
How are we helping?
MediaStyle will be heading to Maniwaki to host a workshop for the youth at the Friendship Centre. It will look at how to build your own personal brand and discuss some of the careers that can come with having a storytelling, communications and media background. We look forward to knowledge sharing with Maniwaki youth, and discussing our experience in the communications and branding world. Watch out Maniwaki, MediaStyle is coming to homework club — we’ll bring the pizza.
This is one of our Ten Acts of Tenacity, commemorating MediaStyle’s 10th anniversary. Throughout January, we will be announcing a series of donations, fundraising initiatives, and pro-bono support aimed at celebrating those making change in our community. This is our way of saying “thank you” to all those who have supported us in during our first decade in business.
