Tenacity Act 1: Concert for Girls+ Rock Ottawa

Girls+ Rock Ottawa is a local organization that offers music-based programming to foster empowerment, inclusivity and community to girls, women, femmes, trans, non-binary, two-spirit, and gender non-conforming folk. Girls+ Rock Ottawa offer a variety of workshops and programs to help beginner and intermediate artists flourish. Most notably, their flagship event is a three-day camp, where participants learn an instrument, join a band, and showcase their achievements for a live performance at the NAC.

The values of Girls+ Rock Ottawa and MediaStyle overlap in many ways. While the MediaStyle team may not have any musical talents, we have a firm belief in equity for all, and supporting feminist movements. Girls+ Rock Ottawa’s pillars include inclusivity, empowerment, community, and fun — all elements that we support, and need to see more of in the Ottawa community.

Girls+ Rock Ottawa has been a pillar within the Ottawa music community for years. They continue to uplift girls, women, femmes, trans, non-binary, two-spirit, and gender non-conforming folk in every project they put forward. Often, women are given a backseat in music and added to bills as an afterthought. Girls+ Rock Ottawa breaks these barriers down, and pushes for a more inclusive and diverse music community.”  — Meaghan Murphy, Strategist at MediaStyle

To kick off Tenacity, MediaStyle is pairing up with Girls+ Rock Ottawa to hold a concert in The Commons. The concert will feature local acts, Kim Kimbit feat. Black Wax, Lucila Al Mar, and Jessie Simmons. For the concert, our space will be transformed into an intimate, and unique concert venue to support women in the Ottawa music scene and Girls+ Rock. We invite you to join us, all alcohol proceeds will be going to Girls+ Rock Ottawa. Don’t miss the opportunity to give back to local artists, and experience a one-night only event in The Commons. Thanks to sponsorship from Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co. and Flying Canoe Hard Cider, and support from Apt613.

This is one of our Ten Acts of Tenacity, commemorating MediaStyle’s 10th anniversary. Throughout January, we will be announcing a series of donations, fundraising initiatives, and pro-bono support aimed at celebrating those making change in our community. This is our way of saying “thank you” to all those who have supported us in during our first decade in business.
