The only “live blogger” on parliament hill? That is a stretch. Multiple reporters in the gallery currently both report and blog live for their news organizations. And there have been multiple accredited reporters on the hill who only published online.

Kady is the only one who blogs in real time, that I know of. Can you show me examples of minute-by-minute live blogging on the Hill? Some reporters add to online services etc…but in Kady’s case it’s the real-time aspect that makes her unique.

THanks, Ian. Take today for example. On parliament hill in a committee, a repoter with the Financial Post, Paul Vierra, reported live from a committee meeting. Filed the story, it was distributed online the canada.com network, and he continued to report. At the same hearing, Joan Biden reported live from CP and filed a story while the proceedings were ongoing and the story was appropriately updated while the proceedings were ongoing. This is real live reporting, and best of all for the readers, it confirms with standard journalism standards. The next thing we know, you will be giving out award for reporters who carry their blackberry in their right pocket or vest pocket.

Yes, CP reporters often filed parts of stories from the Hill. But, as I said before – and as I think the interview with Kady points out what she is doing isn’t long form journalism. It’s “live blogging” – it’s not what Joan Bryden at CP or Paul Vierra at CanWest do…it’s different. Heck, it’s not even what Aaron Wherry does at Maclean’s. Paul Wells has played with the technique, as has David Akin.

Those parliament hill journalists that post content to media blogs (and there is a lot of people in this catagory), be it first thing in the morning, over the course of the day, or whatever, it is live. I guess the question is “blogging”, is this different than live “twittering” or reporting for CP, Canwest, etc. The real issue is quality of journalism… and adherance to journalistic standards. Back in the 80s, somewhere there was somebody taking credit for being the first live faxer, eh.

I’m kinda with Ian on this one. Kady is working exclusively in this new form — a highly personalized, play-by-play of whatever event she’s at. What my colleague Paul Vieira or my friends at CP do is done with perhaps as much haste and speed as Kady but it is a different kind of journalism — not necessarily better or worse, just different. Kady’s work, it seems to me, is also done within “standard journalism standards” (whatever those might be) in that she is writing for her readers and not to advance a particular ideological or commercial objective and she’s working from “primary sources”, i.e. she’s in the committee room with the politicians she’s writing about.
